AI Productivity Gains: A Nobel Laureate's "0.66% Over a Decade" and Why the Big Numbers May Not Add Up
Q1. How much do you think generative AI will boost overall economic productivity over the next 10 years?
Q2. If one task in your company becomes twice as fast, does the whole company become more efficient? Why or why not?
Q3. Why might a famous economist's estimate differ so much from a Wall Street forecast?
INTERNAL BRIEFING MEMO
To: Corporate Strategy Team, Technology Investment Committee From: Kenji Sato, Head of Economic Research Date: July 18, 2026 Subject: Calibrating Our AI Investment Assumptions — Action Required Before Q3 Planning
Purpose Before we finalize next quarter's technology budget, this memo asks the committee to review the productivity assumptions behind our current AI investment case. A recent academic estimate suggests our expectations may be too optimistic.
Key Finding Daron Acemoglu, a professor at MIT who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics, published a paper titled "The Simple Macroeconomics of AI." His central conclusion is striking: AI is likely to raise total factor productivity by at most 0.66% over the next ten years. This is far lower than the headline forecasts we have been citing.
Context: Two Very Different Views For comparison, Goldman Sachs has predicted that generative AI could lift global GDP by 7%. The McKinsey Global Institute estimated that automation technologies, including AI, could add between 1.5 and 3.4 percentage points to annual growth in advanced economies. Acemoglu's figure is an order of magnitude smaller.
Why the Gap? Acemoglu relies on a simple relationship known as Hulten's theorem: the productivity gain roughly equals "the share of tasks AI actually changes" multiplied by "the cost reduction within those tasks." Faster email drafting helps little if manufacturing, sales, and logistics stay the same. Drawing on an estimate from OpenAI researchers, he assumes about 20% of US work (measured by wages) could be affected by AI. However, once deployment cost and training are included, only about 23% of that will be used profitably within ten years — meaning roughly 4.6% of the economy truly changes.
Recommended Action
- Re-run our three-year ROI model using a conservative productivity range.
- Separate "task-level speed gains" from "firm-wide efficiency gains" in our reporting.
- Present both scenarios at the August strategy review.
Please send comments by July 25.

(5 min)
Q1. According to the memo, what is Acemoglu's estimate for AI-driven productivity growth over ten years?
Q2. How does Goldman Sachs' forecast compare with Acemoglu's estimate?
Q3. In simple terms, what does Hulten's theorem say determines the productivity gain?
Q4. What share of US work does the memo say could be affected by AI, and what share of that will be used profitably within ten years? (AI
Q5. What three actions does the memo recommend to the committee?
|---|---|---|
(Bottom line) | The key takeaway is that ____________. | |
(Key figure) | A Nobel laureate estimates AI will add only ____________ over ____________. | |
(Contrast) | That is far lower than forecasts such as ____________. | |
(Reason) | The reason is that only ____________ of the economy actually changes. | |
(Recommendation) | So I suggest we ____________ before finalizing the budget. |
1. estimate (n./v.)
- Example: Acemoglu's estimate is far more conservative than Wall Street's forecasts.
2. productivity (n.) — 生産性
- Example: The debate is about how much AI will raise economy-wide productivity.
3. conservative (adj.) —
- Example: Let's use a conservative assumption in the ROI model.
4. deployment (n.) —
- Example: Deployment cost and staff training reduce the real impact of AI.
5. forecast (n./v.) —
- Example: Goldman Sachs' forecast points to a 7% boost to global GDP.
Fill-in-the-blank exercise
- The analyst gave a very ____________ estimate to avoid over-promising the results.
- Faster email drafting improves one task, but it does not automatically raise firm-wide ____________.
- Their ____________ predicts strong demand, but the assumptions behind it are unclear.
- High ____________ cost is one reason only part of the technology will be used profitably.
1. conservative / 2. productivity / 3. forecast / 4. deployment)
Part 3:
Discussion Topic A
Question: Do you think a task-level speed gain (for example, faster document preparation) really improves your whole company's performance? Why or why not?
Discussion Topic B
Question: When a Nobel laureate's estimate is much lower than a bank's forecast, whose number should managers trust when planning a budget?
Discussion Topic C
Question: In your own workplace, which tasks could AI realistically change within ten years, and which tasks would be hard to automate?
Useful phrases
| English | Japanese |
|---|---|
| In my view, the key issue is ...
| That figure sounds too optimistic to me.
| It depends on how you define ... | …
| Let me put that number in context. |

Mock Interview Scenario A
Interviewer: "This role requires you to challenge optimistic assumptions with data. Can you give an example of when you questioned a number that everyone else accepted?"
Mock Interview Scenario B
Interviewer: "How would you explain a complex economic finding — like why AI's productivity impact might be small — to a non-technical executive in under a minute?"
Mock Interview Scenario C
Interviewer: "If our investment case relies on an aggressive forecast, how would you propose we manage that risk?"
Common Mistakes (NG Patterns)
- Bad: "AI will grow the economy by 0.66%."
- Good: "One Nobel laureate estimates only about 0.66% over ten years — an order of magnitude below Wall Street forecasts."
- Bad: "Well, there are many studies, and Goldman Sachs says one thing, and McKinsey says another, and then..."
- Good: "The bottom line is that the productivity impact may be much smaller than expected. Let me explain why."
- Bad: "AI is useless for the economy."
- Good: "The overall impact may be modest, though specific tasks clearly benefit."
- Bad: "It's basically Hulten's theorem, so the answer is 0.66%."
- Good: "Using a simple rule — the productivity gain equals the share of tasks changed times the cost saved — the answer comes to about 0.66%."
